Heavy rains in June caused a rise of the Verdigris River and resulted in localized flooding. The river rose rapidly reaching a height of 16 m on July 1st at 8 AM. With this volume of water, the river remained above flood stage (9.1 m) for 9 days.

The flood hit the Coffeyville Resources LLC refinery allowing an estimated 80,600 gallons of crude oil and crude oil fractions to pollute the water.

FEMA has estimated that this flood caused nearly 40 million USD of damage to the local communities and agricultural producers in southeast Kansas.

About 5.000 people were evacuated from their homes.
