The earthquake was characterized by ground motions with large amplitude and long period (4-8 s) in the Yufutsu sedimentary basin. This generated a tsunami with an estimated wave height of 4 m along the southeastern coast of Hokkaido. The earthquake was followed by further earthquakes with moment magnitudes ranging between 4-7.

Due to the earthquake at least 589 people were injured, extensive damage, landslides and power outages occurred, and many roads were damaged in southeastern Hokkaido.
