Occurrence

40.5 m
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) observed tsunami heights of 7.3 m or higher in Fukushima Prefecture. JMA’s tsunami bulletin included, however, the caveat that tsunamis higher than those recorded at the observation sites could have occurred along the coast. In fact, in situ observations after the disaster indicate that in some coastal zones tsunami heights were significantly higher. Mean inundation heights of 10–15 m in the southern Sanriku region just north of Sendai were reported, as well as several peaks of inundation along the coast from the northern to middle part of Sanriku.
