Description of the Occurrence
The epicenter was located 7 km North-West of the town of L’Aquila. This shallow earthquake occurred on normal faulting on the Apennine mountains with an epicentral depth of about 8 km.

Description of the Consequences
The earthquake caused damage to between 3,000 and 11,000 buildings in the medieval city of L'Aquila. Several buildings also collapsed. 308 people died in the earthquake and more then 1,500 people were injured. Around 65,000 people were rendered homeless.
