On August 24, Dorian was developed from a tropical wave over the Central Atlantic. It moved through the Lesser Antilles and became a hurricane north of the Greater Antilles on August 28.

During the following days, Dorian was rapidly intensified. By September 1, it reached its peak as a Category 5 hurricane with one-minute sustained winds of 295 km/h (185 mph) and a minimum central pressure of 910 millibars (26.87 inHg).

On September 1, it made landfall in The Bahamas in Elbow Cay (east of Abaco Island) and on Grand Bahama, remaining stationary for about one day. It was weakened significantly on September 3 and moved northwestward, reaching Category 2 intensity on September 6, when it made landfall on Cape Hatteras. It became an extratropical cyclone on September 7 landing on Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. It dissipated near Greenland on September 10.

Hurricane Dorian was a catastrophic event, characterised as the most intense tropical cyclone to strike the Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian caused considerable damage and economic losses in the coastal regions of the Southeastern United States and Atlantic Canada. Problems occurred in the coordination of the relief efforts due to the magnitude of the disaster.

Officially, there were 50 fatalities (UN reports stated 20 fatalities in the Bahamas, 17 in the Abacos and 3 in Grand Bahama). Nearly 2,500 people remained unaccounted for (aljazeera news).
More than 76,000 people were affected and were in need of immediate humanitarian relief (World Food Programme), and 70,000 houses were completely destroyed (aljazeera news).

Electricity transformers were among the damaged assets.
The cost of damage was preliminary estimated to be in the order of 7 billion US dollars.
